Every student. Every day

American Legion Boys/Girls State

Selection Process:
Girls are nominated by all Faculty and Staff at each school in January. Students are encouraged to let their teachers and counselors know that they are interested in being nominated. Also nominating students are the members of the American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary. From these pools of students an interview will take place.

The interview is made up of Auxiliary, Legion and community members. Interviews will be held locally in March ( exact dates and locations are TBA). There are no “FaceTime” interviews. There is no make up date for interviews.  Each student is given 5 minutes to answer a set of questions asked by the committee. They will be given a quick score immediately after each interview ( 1-5)  that is not shared with anyone. At the end of the interview process, the scores are compiled and the top scoring students from each school are selected. Students who participate in the American Legion Oratorical Contest, Jr. members of ALA or AL and students with immediate family in the military will be given special consideration.

Students will be notified the following week of who is selected to attend Girls and Boys State. Each school has a set amount of students who can attend plus we offer positions to homeschool and private school students as well. Each school will also be offered alternates. Alternates will take the place of delegates who can not attend or in rare cases may even be granted entrance as delegates. Because of this reason Alternates are encouraged to keep their calendars open during the time of Girls and Boys State.

Boys and Girls State in Tennessee is made up of the cream of the crop students who are high achievers. Their academic record should reflect good grades and attendance.

Requirements:
Girls State delegates are required to help fund raise by assisting or modeling in the Spring Fashion Show and selling 5 tickets to the event. Also Girls are required to distribute Poppies on Memorial Day Saturday May 25. * lack of participation will result in the loss of position as a delegate to Girls State.

Both Girls and Boys State cost $400 to attend. They are sponsored by the American Legion and Auxiliary and paid for by businesses in the community who see the value in investing in the lives of our future leaders.* If AFTER selection is made your family has a business that wants to contribute to Girls and Boys state that would be appreciated.

Boys State delegates will have to pay a $50 fee to the American Legion prior to attending.

Girls will be paying a $50 activity fee once they attend.

If for any reason this is a hardship for a student, they will need to let Jim Greer or Celeste Gammon know and it will be covered.

Boys State is May 19-25 at TTU in Cookeville

Girls State is May 26-June 1 @ David Lipscomb University in Nashville

Students must attend 100% of the week and will not be permitted to leave for any reason.

Checking emails once the selection process begins is of utmost importance as large bodies of information can only be passed through email.

Girls State delegates will have a Tea they are asked to attend with their Mothers in late April where they are given vital information about Girls State.
Boys State delegates will also have a meeting where information about the week will be given.
Exact Dates and times are forthcoming. Information given at this meeting will not be emailed and what is given out will only be distributed at the meeting.
All dates and times will be given in February prior to the interviews.

Thank you for your interest in Girls and Boys State
