Veronica Pennington, M.P.A. Coordinator of Diversity Initiatives –
 Hello from Athens!
We are now accepting applicants to our VetCAMP 2019, which is scheduled for June 16-22, 2019. This program is offered to rising high school juniors and seniors and rising college freshmen to evaluate their skills and competitiveness as future veterinarians, provide mentorship and help them experience veterinary medicine as an exciting career path. It’s a great experience and the students have a lot of fun while also learning about the profession.

American Legion Boys/Girls State

The interview is made up of Auxiliary, Legion and community members. Interviews will be held locally in March ( exact dates and locations are TBA). There are no “FaceTime” interviews. There is no make up date for interviews.  Each student is given 5 minutes to answer a set of questions asked by the committee. They will be given a quick score immediately after each interview ( 1-5)  that is not shared with anyone. At the end of the interview process, the scores are compiled and the top scoring students from each school are selected. Students who participate in the American Legion Oratorical Contest, Jr. members of ALA or AL and students with immediate family in the military will be given special consideration.

Students will be notified the following week of who is selected to attend Girls and Boys State. Each school has a set amount of students who can attend plus we offer positions to homeschool and private school students as well. Each school will also be offered alternates. Alternates will take the place of delegates who can not attend or in rare cases may even be granted entrance as delegates. Because of this reason Alternates are encouraged to keep their calendars open during the time of Girls and Boys State.

Boys and Girls State in Tennessee is made up of the cream of the crop students who are high achievers. Their academic record should reflect good grades and attendance.
